Born in Westchester County, New York, son of John Anthony Woolf and Sarah Devoe. His father's conversion to Mormonism; move to Nauvoo, Illinois, 1843; purchase of a farm; blessing given to his father by Joseph Smith; persecution of the Mormons at Nauvoo; exodus west; arrival in Salt Lake Valley, 1847; recollection of the miracle of the seagulls; settlement in Willow Creek (Mona), Utah; involvement in the Walker War; move to Hyde Park, Utah; marriage to Ellen M. Hyde; return to the Missouri River to aid emigrants.
